From hair metal bands in the 80s to pop rock, guitar solos are forever etched in the history of modern music. Although there weren’t many female guitarists as famous as Slash, Jimmy Page, Kurt Cobain or the likes, there are some seriously talented girls guitarists around. Like a YouTube comment on a video read, “There is nothing sexier than a fit bird on a Les Paul”.

Orianthi
Orianthi is a 31-year-old Australian guitarist known as one of the most spectacular and dynamic guitar shredders presently in business. She had featured in the re-make of “We are the world” and appeared on American Idol. Story has it that king of pop Micheal Jackson selected her as his on-tour guitarist because of her talent after she played the “Beat It” solo made famous by the legendary Eddie Van Halen. She has worked with artists like Alice Cooper, Carrie Underwood, Steve Vai and Carlos Santana.
In 2009, when Carlos Santana was asked about Oranthi in an interview, he said “If I was going to pass the baton to somebody, she would be my first choice.”

Joanne Shaw Taylor
Joanne Shaw Taylor is a British blues rock guitarist and singer, who was discovered by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics at the age of 16.
In 2010, the British music publication, Blue Matters!, announced Joanne “the new face of the blues”. The way Joanne plays has a close resemblance to Stevie Ray Vaughn whom she covers during her live performances.
Allison Robertson
Allison Robertson formed The Donnas along with her three childhood friends. It has been almost 20 years since the punk rock group started rocking and her guitar skills have given her an iconic status among the greats. Allison has the remarkable capability to pick speed and tap with her band members and it is her signature bends that has made many hit singles for the band!
Samantha Fish
Samantha Fish is an astoundingly awesome female guitarist who is on the skill level of someone twice her age. After turning 18, she used to join singers and bands who were performing at Knuckleheads. She won the Blues Music Awards in Memphis for the Best New Artist Debut in 2012.
Anna Calvi
Calvi’s debut album was nominated for the Mercury Prize and earned her a nomination for British Breakthrough Act at the 2012 Brit Awards. Born in September 1980, she was confined to bed for first three years of her life. She’s known for her intense live performances and she says that she tries to create the sound of other instruments through her guitar. Bad ass to the core!

Carrie Brownstein
Brownstein first came into prominence as a band member of Excuse 17. She then went on to form punk-indie trio Sleater-Kinney. In 2006, Brownstein was the only woman to earn a spot in the Rolling Stone readers’ list of the 25 “Most Underrated Guitarists of All-Time”.
Kaki King
King is known for her energetic live performances and percussive and jazz-tinged melodies. In February 2006, she was featured on the Rolling Stone list of “The New Guitar Gods”. King was the sole woman and youngest artist on the list and she had worked alongside Eddie Vedder and Michael Brook for the Golden Globe winning original score for Sean Penn’s Into the Wild.
St. Vincent (Annie Erin Clark)
St. Vincent’s work has received acclaim for its distinct musical style, which blends soft rock, experimental rock, electropop, and jazz influences. Clark was a member of Sufjan Stevens’s touring band before forming her own band in 2006. In 2015, she performed with Wire in Chicago and she’s been talked about as “one of the past decade’s most distinct and innovative guitarists.”

Kesha has reportedly sold over 33 million records (albums, tracks, and ringtones) in the United States and 60 million records worldwide. She is best known for “Tik Tok” which is among the best-selling digital singles in history, selling over 14 million units internationally. She’s also created guitar-driven ballads such as “Love Into The Light”, “Wonderland” and “Past Lives” which showcase her artistic finesse.
Haim Sisters
HAIM is an American pop rock band that originated in Los Angeles. The band comprises of the three incredibly hot and amazing female guitarists namely Este, Danielle and Alana.
Grace Potter
Grace Evelyn Potter is a skilled guitarist who is known for her vocal qualities which is evocative of blues rock singers like Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, or Koko Taylor. Her passionate live performances are a treat to the ears and she has worked with some really famous names in the industry such as Kenny Chesney and The Rolling Stones.

She performed the cover of Elton John’s song “Your Song” which reached number two in UK and she even performed the song at the wedding reception of Prince William and Catherine Middleton at the Buckingham Palace.

Though her guitar skills are not as polished as some of the other artists on this list, she is still incredibly talented on the guitar. She’s best known for her narrative song lyrics that complement her guitar to paint a picture.
